If you have a blog, linkbaiting may have become a rule of thumb when writing content. It’s not always a good thing, but it’s not completely evil either. But the real issue is… do bloggers know how to linkbait?.
Definition of Linkbait
Linkbait is any blog post or article that can compel people to react. Over the internet, a reaction means discussion on facebook, on blogs, and on twitter. Because people love communicating through the internet, they won’t be satisfied with just commenting on your posts. If your blog post is interesting enough, people cannot help but say something about it on twitter, facebook etc.. Linkbait is nothing more or less than written content that attracts a buzz, comments and, above all, links.
Is it always good to linkbait?
Whether or not linkbait is good or bad, shady or perfectly ethical depends on whether the article is within the niche of the blog or not. If you have a blog that most parents read, talking about a controversial parenting topic is a good linkbait. A bad linkbait is something that could damage your credibility, like a rant or an article flaming other people. Nevertheless, whether something that draws attention of people can be called bad or good linkbait is up for debate.
Ready to Write Your First Linkbait?
There are certain types of posts or content that seem to attract much linking. Tutorial posts are impressive, especially when the topic is on a new innovation or a freaky invention. If you’re opinionated, you might want to write a controversial opinion article on a hot topic. Articles that ‘expose’ something are always effective, but posting these could mean trouble.
Inflammatory pieces make very good linkbaits but that doesn’t mean you have to resort to writing these to grab attention. It’s like the tabloids that we secretly buy from the convenience store when no one’s looking.
A rule I learned long ago as a blogger is this… never post something that you cannot stand up for.
Use “Link Love” as Linkbait
Link love is one of the most common types of linkbaits. Linking to someone else’s article instantly alerts the other blogger. Furthermore, some blogging platforms like wordpress allow trackbacks, which automatically places your “reaction” article’s URL under the blogpost of the other blogger.
A blog is an interaction with other people. Your website will attract a certain audience. Your blog will start to become popular when people from all over start to visit and communicate with you. Being a blogger, you should always write posts that other people can proudly share on other sites. Keep your audience in mind when link baiting.
