You may have heard that search engines like to see links and plenty of them to a website, it helps the search engines to determine which sites they should list, because a link to a site is a bit like a vote for a site. That’s a valid point as, spammers networks aside, websites do have a tendency to link most to other sites that are interesting to the first sites readers.
If you are a small business owner with a website how do you go about building links to your website? There are several ways to get links but it is important to know that all links are not the same, some are much more powerful than others. A small few links from good authoritative site can be worth as dozens of links from other.
The best links to get are those that use your target keywords as the anchor text (the clickable words on the other site) and they come from sites that are relevant to your business or that are powerful for other reasons. (A link from Harvard University to your book-keeping website would be choice even if it is not related to your business!)
Some easy ways to get links to your website:
Firstly, have good content, whether this be in a blog or traditional style website, give potential link sources something good to link to then promote it:
See if your suppliers will link to you and try getting links from appropriate associations of professionals.
Perhaps do a deal with a similar service in another city, a mention with a link to them from a blog article of yours in return for a similar mention from them of your website.
Find out who links to your competitors and try to get links from those sites too. You can check your competitor links by typing the following string into your browser location bar:
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=linkdomain:somedomain.com%20-site:somedomain.com
Remember to replace the two ‘somedomain.com’ bits in there with the domain you are examining.
Are there directories that specialize in your particular field? Prominent bloggers? – Try to get links from them or a product review (with a link to your site obviously).
See if you can guest post in those industry blogs with a link or two to your site of course.
Even unrelated sites can have their uses, local directories help to raise your profile locally and have a little link juice and they are good citation references if you are hoping to get a Google Local Business listing (more about that another time…).
Why not write an article relevant to your industry and publish it on article directories or social sites like Hubpages.com. Remember to include a link back to your site of course! Better still, write a few articles and spread them around several article directories like Goarticles.com and Ezinearticles.com and some social sites like Hubpages.com and Squidoo.com. Interlink them a bit and link most of them to your main site.
Do you have an RSS feed on your site? Add the RSS feed to the various RSS distribution services like feedage.com and feedagg.com.

When it comes to improving your rank in the search engines, nothing is more important that link building. What you have to realize, however, is that building links can harm as well as help your website if you simply build links randomly or without knowing what you are doing. Many new webmasters don’t do their homework and start off on the wrong track, put in hours and hours of hard work and later come to realize that they were doing it the wrong way. Building links ethically and with proper planning leads to long term results and gives you an edge over the competition. So if you’re beginning your Internet marketing career, there are a few link building mistakes that you need to avoid if you want to get high quality traffic without the unnecessary headaches. Given below are a few common mistakes that you need to avoid when building links.
An easy mistake to overlook is using anchor text with your backlinks that does not include your targeted keywords for your site. Many people use action words as anchor text when they are really supposed to be using the keywords that they want to rank for in the search engines – instead of making “Buy Now” or “Learn More” your clickable link; you should focus on keywords. When you’re trying your hand at SEO, you always have to remember the importance of having your main keywords in the anchor text. So if a backlink doesn’t utilize the anchor text, it loses its value. Never add a link from your site to a page containing dozens or even a hundred or more links on it. At all costs avoid the pages you come across that has 200 or 300 links on a single page. But there are directories out there that use the “no-follow” tag on all the free links, in such case, it won’t matter if your link is on there, it still counts.
Another thing to watch for is the site’s reputation that you are linking to. Many times in the past a site that had a good reputation ruined it by suddenly using “black hat” techniques Always check to see where your links are pointed to.
