When people start thinking about making money online, they often limit themselves to what they think will sell. This is a mistake, because you can sell anything online these days. Instead of thinking about what to sell, think about what you have to sell and how to market it.
Wouldn’t you rather have a business that made you money and that you enjoyed instead of a business that made money but you didn’t enjoy? You have to bear in mind that you will be doing this for a long time. If you go about your internet marketing strategy the right way, you can make just as much money from selling cake decorating books as you can from marketing any other product.
The problem with the ‘big ticket’ items is competition. If you’ve joined an affiliate program and are selling software, for instance, you already have a lot of competition right there within that particular program, not to mention all the other competitors. You are going to have to put a lot of time, effort and money just into getting noticed online.
You’ll have a lot less competition to deal with if you choose a smaller market. Let’s say you like decorating cakes, for example. You can start off by joining a large book distribution affiliate program and specialize in books about cake baking. An even better idea would be to write a how to decorate cake book yourself. You can offer it in both print and ebook format. With a world-wide market, you will find millions of potential customers for your book.
The next step is to make your website stand out from the rest. Make it something that people will want to stay at and browse. Make it inspiring, so that your visitors will think, ‘I want to learn how to do that.’ Offer a free newsletter that includes cake decorating tips and other interesting news. Don’t give them too many tips in your newsletter, though. The idea is to pique their interest and get them to buy your book, not to give it all away in your newsletters.
As time goes on, you will find innumerable ways to expand your market. You may even want to start new websites. One might be about wedding cakes or even a full wedding planning service. You can also make an site that reviews artistic cake bakers in major cities and you can get commissions on sales.
Cakes may not be your thing. The idea here is not to talk you into selling cakes, it is to prove that you can sell whatever you like online. Focus first on the things you want most to sell. Then focus on your internet marketing strategy. Good luck!
